The RoboHelp Server “Reload” option 18th June 2009 (Thursday)

I’ve been playing recently with our RoboHelp Server 8 set-up. It has lots of goodies to entice anyone with an older version. Not least the ability to have areas on the server to which you can publish and which can be protected by making it only available to selected groups of users. For example, finance or HR information can be tied down so that only members of staff in those departments can see the help for their applications even though the RoboHelp Server hosts all kinds of application help.

The slightly redesigned user interface in the RoboHelp Server Web Administrator has a “Reload” button designed to refresh your screen thereby ensuring you are seeing all the changes made elsewhere. However I have uncovered a “gotcha” that is worth sharing with others. The “Reload” button only applies to the view displayed in the RoboHelp Server Web Administrator.

For example, create a new area in the “Areas” view. You click “Reload” and it rightfully becomes available in the “Select an Area” drop down. If you then go to the “Projects” view and click on the “Area” dropdown, the new area is not displayed until you click “Reload” again.

In short, it is good practice to click the “Reload” button whenever you change views to ensure you are working with the latest RoboHelp Server configuration. If you don’t, and you have made changes elsewhere, you could do a considerable amount of head scratching as you attempt to understand what is going on.

Hi,

Quick question:

I have a server, Im trying to protect my help system and after I enter username and password, Im getting the name of the page plus a “?null” (i.e. mypage.html?null).

Do you know how to fix this?

Thank you,

Hi Diego.

Can you give me some more information please. Can you tell me what version of RoboHelp Server you are using, whether you have successfully published any projects using the RoboHelp project’s WebHelp Pro single source layout and what path you are using to your server.

As an aside I am wondering what you are hoping to achieve by way of securing your help files. The RoboHelp Server is mainly designed as a tool to host an online help format in a way that you can track its usage. Although there is a way you can host your help in “areas” (in RoboHelp Server 8) that you can protect, I am wondering if this is what you are trying to achieve.
